Colbie Caillat – Coco / 2007 Universal / 12 Tracks / http://www.colbiecaillatmusic.com / http://www.universalrepublic.com /

Colbie Caillat’s “Coco” starts off in a very sedate way. The first track on the album is “Oxygen”, and it provides listeners with a brand of rock infused pop music. Hints of Kelly Clarkson and Sheryl Crow both present themselves throughout “Oxygen”, placing Caillat into good company right from the opening gate. “The Little Things” has the same general genre style to the track, but has a slower blend of a Pink meets Fergie style. Again, the music on “Coco” may not be at the edge of experimentation, but it is done tastefully and in a catchy way.

The tracks on “Coco” all have a decent runtime but the sweet harmonies and overall sounds achieved by each of the tracks on the disc will make it feel like each song is about two minutes. This bodes well for the relative newcomer Caillat. Why exactly Caillat has not broken it big on the major music scene is beyond me; any of the tracks on “Coco” could be the next big track on pop radio, especially since Gwen and Fergie’s albums are both rapidly aging and the aforementioned Clarkson seems to be the only star that has any vitality left on eir latest release. The first track that seems as if it may not be ready for the big time is “Bubbly”, and this could even be put into a “Big Girls Don’t Cry”-type of single. While this album is on Universal, one has to wonder whether it will get the publicity and the push that it deserve to get.

As far as pop albums go, “Coco” is the pinnacle of the genre. There is virtually nothing that I could point to as needing further development, whether it be Caillat’s vocals or the fitting instrumentation on the track. Of particular note during this album has to be “Feelings Show”. There is the same sort of laid back style that is present through a number of tracks on “Coco”, but Caillat during this track crafts a catchy chorus that will insert itself in listeners for months, if not years to come. I believe that there may be a track on “Coco” that will find its’ way up to a respectable spot on the Billboard charts. If not, here’s to hoping that Caillat will be able to release a follow-up album that is as convincing as this one.
