With all the summer music festivals coming around this year, Different Kind of Dude Fest is offering something different but necessary—it bills music along with an anti-sexist education. Through workshops, discussions and large-group art projects, Different Kind of Dude Fest aims to present an alternative to the self-indulgent culture of the average music festival. There will be space for discussion of masculinity and how to be a responsible feminist ally, in addition to great music. The following bands will be performing:

FRIDAY AUG 10
Mass Movement of the Moth (DC)
Ampere (MA)
Des Ark (NC/DC)
Yo Man Go! (PA)
Daitro (France)
Dissystema (PA)

SATURDAY AUG 11
Circle Takes the Square (GA)
Off Minor (PA/NYC)
Aghast (VA/DC)
In First Person (NJ)
Pygmy Lush (VA)
Mouthbreather (VA)
Henry the Horse (MD)

Different Kind of Dude Fest is being organized by an all volunteer collective based in Washington, DC.  All proceeds from the entry fee will be donated to the organizations HIPS (Helping Individuals Prostitutes Survive www.hips.org) and Ubuntu! (http://iambecauseweare.wordpress.com). DKDF organizing collective members say this about the fest:
“What if we came together to talk honestly about gender expectations and punk? What if we had space to explore the many possibilities of being, acting and feeling that already surround us? That’s what Different Kind of Dude Fest is all about.”

”To me, Different Kind of Dude Fest is about creating a safe, inclusive space where people feel like they can learn, grow, discuss, and have a positive experience. Different Kind of Dude Fest is a place to learn about
yourself and how to deal with the issues that go along with living in a misogynist, patriarchal society. We have all internalized this self-defeating culture, and Different Kind of Dude Fest can be a place where we can explore how to change and heal within ourselves.”
