Restricted: Voices on Disability and Sexuality #1 / 24M 1:00 / JKBeal, 920 E. Wooster #4, Bowling Green, OH 43402 /
As one could very well expect from the subtitle of “Restrictedâ€, this zine has to do with empowering the previously marginalized voices of members possessing a different level of ability and sexuality. The works present in this issue of the zine were culled together by one Jeanette K Beal, and the energy in which ey starts out “Welcome To The Freakshow†imbues the rest of the zine with a momentum that will make it virtually impossible to put Restricted down. The layout has a lot of variation to it but has enough of a common thread (by the frame in which a number of articles reside) to make individuals know that they are still reading Restricted. Pieces here run the gamut of poetry, prose, historical pieces, painted art, and even a question and answer section. The variety of different styles here along with a number of different contributors give that much more in the way of energy to a magazine that is already shuttling along at the highest of speeds. Perhaps the most interesting piece in this issue of “Restricted†would have to be Joelle Ruby Ryan’s piece, “’Defected’ Bodies/Queer Bodies: Notes on the Intersections of Transgender and Disabilityâ€. As this title is self-explanatory, I feel okay moving onto describing yet another solid piece, which goes into deal about “Multiple Personality Developmentâ€. Restricted has a ton of information that anyone can easily understand, and the pieces allow individuals that are still wanting more information to easily find it.

where can we access this? Is there a link? I’d love to check it out and maybe get the authors to post something to my site if they are interested.
Hey I just stumbled upon this review and got all nostalgic. Sadly due to printing costs I was unable to continue the print-version of the zine and the project fizzled. If folks (including Ms. Pet) were interested in collaborating on an online version of a site (and could do a better job than I of an WCAG-compliant code) I would love to rekindle this project.
As it stands, Breath & Shadow is an excellent online publication featuring writers with disabilities and is worth checking out – http://www.abilitymaine.org/breath/
Cheers!
