Harry Knuckles and the Pearl Necklace / 2006 MVD / 116 Minutes / http://www.mvdb2b.com / http://www.odessafilmworks.com/hkatpn /

Harry Knuckles and the Pearl Necklace is done by the director that did “Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter”. Saying that, Harry Knuckles feels more like a Troma movie than anything else. Even Lloyd Kaufman is present in a small role during the movie. The movie tells a story about a super-spy named Harry Knuckles and eir adventures with the Mexican luchador El Santos. In this story, a radioactive pearl necklace is stolen by the Bionic Bigfoot.

Two mysterious females enlist Harry Knuckles to solve the same, and the rest of the story shows that the strange machinations of the rest of the characters are due to the previously-unknown (to Harry) brother of Knuckles. The movie has a solid story line but a number of obvious continuity errors provide minor annoyances to the viewers. For example, the cars in the flashback scene (where El Santos’ mom is fixing lunch for El Santos and Harry) are all current makes and models .This would not have been a hard fix to make; just move the two cars sitting at the house out onto the street. Also, there is another goof in the pool scene where Harry is standing in front of a puddle of water which shows that they did the following scene one other time before that one.

Anyways, those two goofs are not anything serious; the characters are interesting and fleshed out while not falling prey to the archetypes of hero or antagonist quite nearly as much as they are in other movies. The quality of the film is grainy but not unwatchable at all. What the film quality reminds me of are the movies from the mid to late seventies; Supergirl, Westworld, and Death Race 2000 all have comparable qualities. Whether this was intentional or not, I do not know; it lends an air of authenticity to the movie. The sound track for the movie has to be the most interesting thing; all the lines in “Harry Knuckles and the Pearl Necklace” seem to be overdubbed, allowing the movie to gain an otherworldly flair that should bring individuals back to all of the Bruce Lee flicks. There are obvious allusions to movies here; the DJ / radio station scenes are reminiscent of Do The Right Thing, the working out montage is reminiscent of Rocky, and the drinking scene is reminiscent of an Indiana Jones movie. I wish I could have seen the prior Harry Knuckles movies just to see how the character development and overall feel of the movie has changed. Still, this movie does not require individuals to go any watch the prior movies to get an appreciation about what is going on during it. For fans of Indiana Jones or Troma like movies, Harry Knuckles and the Pearl Necklace will keep individuals focused in for almost two hours of their time. There is room for a sequel, but I believe that Odessa is hard at work on a new movie called Black Kissinger that will be all the range when it comes out.
