Pretty much everybody watches porn, but few individuals know exactly how porn is made or what all the production of a film entails. Enter Richard Menon, the self-dubbed “Indian Playboyâ€, who moved from a career in finances to create porn. Since then, ey has made Ecstasyvision Inc, a company that seems to be gaining popularity with each day. The film is bundled with a book that details any questions that individuals may have above the porn industry. This documentary is spread out over sixty-five minutes, a time that may seem short when compared to most feature films.
The length of this documentary is actually perfect, because what happens often is that documentaries start to meander and lose some of the focus that is present during films of The Indian Playboy’s length. The turn-around time for the creation of this video is short enough (done in April, 2007) so that the industry has not changed in the slightest in the meanwhile. Menon has avoided the timeliness problem in the creation of this documentary, and in doing so, ensures that this will be the definitive film in the field for years to come. This film does not seem like the same biased fare that is present in a lot of documentaries, where films seem more like pitches for time shares rather than films trying to provide information about a specific subject or field. Regardless, I know that I would like to actually see some of Menon’s films, just to see if the output is as solid as the documentary would make it seem. I’m sure Menon’s films are interesting, titillating, and otherwise impressive, but perhaps this could be bundled with one of eir films for the future.
Give this documentary a view if you would like to see exactly what the porn industry is like. I know that I had no information about the domain before I popped the film into my DVD player, and now I can start appreciating more of the nuance and effort that it takes to create an “adult†film. The question/answer book is the perfect addition to this DVD, as it provides a little bit more information about issues and matters that may not have been given enough time during the film itself. While there is an anti-porn bias when it comes to the major film festivals, I would have to nominate this for being one of the better documentaries of 2007.
