Shalini – The Surface And The Shine – Shalini, formerly of San Francisco’s Vinyl Devotion, has been recording solo albums for the past few years and November 9th marked the release of her third solo album, The Surface and the Shine (Electric Devil). You can really hear all of Shalini’s influences on this one – especially power pop icons like Mitch Easter, Cheap Trick, and the Go-Gos. TSATS is definitely Shalini’s most mature and cosmic album to date, but still retains that thread of fun that runs through her previous material. There are even guest appearances from Mitch Easter (Let’s Active), Jane Francis (Velvet), and Paul Chastain (Velvet Crush). Definitely a contender for power pop album of the year.

Press:
“A strong power-pop album filled with the kind of songs and performances that would make Pete Townshend and Rick Nielsen blush.” – Relish Now
“Chatterjee employs crackling riffs and a sense of melody that’s all about reeling in listeners.” Aversion
“From the winsome femme vocals and soaring harmonies to the mélange of brash, crashing chords to the pulse-quickening rhythmic surges and luminous keyboard flourishes, The Surface and the Shine wants to break your heart.” – Harp
“Rich in both preternatural pop smarts and sheer velocity.” Caught in the Carousel
“You will want to rock this delightful soul based album in continuous play.” – Melodic.net

“Wispy piano, gentle guitars, and a huge voice allow the ruminative Lavella to fit comfortably in the company of such singer-songwriters as Sarah MacLachlan and Beth Orton.” – RetroLowFi

“A gifted vocalist and multi-instrumentalist with an ear for soundscapes.” – Bullz-Eye
