Brian Dewan isn’t just a musician, he’s artistic in every sense of the word. In addition to his music career, he has been linked to the worlds of furniture making, art and instrumentation.

On the November 13, Dewan will be releasing the first installment of the Humanitarium series, a semi-annual series of folk compilations, entitled Words of Wisdom. This disc contains a collection of old folk songs that have been compiled from all walks of life and have been tweaked with the likes of a few of Dewan’s favorite instruments. They include the autoharp, electric zither, organ and accordion.

Dewan’s musical catalog is classified into electronic and vocal. The vocal side tends to be more hymn, folk and even rock like, which can be heard in his two previous releases Brian Dewan Tells the Story (1993, Bar None Records) and The Operating Theatre (1998, Instinct Records).

Dewan has also been known to create album art for other musicians such as the cover of David Byrne’s Uh-Oh, They Might Be Giants’ Lincoln, and the interior artwork of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel. He has also been linked creatively with with include Blue Man Group, Sesame Street, Flaming Fire, The Music Tapes, Loser’s Lounge and The Musical Stones of Skiddaw.

This collection of songs is one for the ages, due to the unique and creative reinterpretations of these classic folk classics.
