Fader #49 / 1:30 / 180M / http://www.thefader.com /

Fader has their ears to the ground when it comes to the cutting edge of independent music. This time around, they cover such soon to be superstars as Jah Cure, Simian Mobile Disco, and Band of Horses. There are a lot of advertisements in this issue, that is true, but after individuals get into the actual magazine, the amount of different pieces that one can be marveled by increases. The only thing that seems to be weak in this issue would have to be the introductions to a number of the featured articles. Looking at the record label or the myspace of the band yields a similarly-worded introduction in a number of cases. The piece breaks free of the press release-type style of the introduction, but this is a curious presence in a magazine of this caliber. Another thing that I would like to have seen would be more reviews stuck at the end of the magazine: there are only about 10-15 reviews present in an almost-200 page magazine. However, “Door Stories” is a strong piece that occupies a number of those pages where there would normally be reviews, which features the life stories of a number of individuals present at the Manhattan help center, “The Door”. Give the magazine a spin if you can’t stand the also-rans that are present in Spin, but see if the issue has enough in the way of interesting information before you purchase it from the newsstand. I know I’ll be looking forward to subsequent issues.
