Cake or Death #5 / :20 / 20L / $1 / Cake or Death, 917 Creamery Rd, Newtown, PA 18940 / http://cakeofdeath.cjb.net /

This issue is the perfect example of what would happen when a bunch of high schoolers would get together and mesh all the oh-my-god desires with a strong style of writing and a great sense of humor. CoD is like the early issues of Glendale Boulevard or Mecaroni and Fleas due to great pieces like “Reader Mail”, or the little interjections (Oh Man, look at that Q! in reference to the Alexisonfire interview, Michele is on crack in the Hudsucker Proxy piece). By far the best piece in this Cake or Death would have to be “The Good, The Bad..and the Awesome”, which has the writers of CoD taking on issues that have piqued their interest such as “Employment:Wow! I get a paycheck every week! What the crap? Why didn’t I try this before?” The only thing that gets the slightest bit annoying with Cake or Death would be the complete focus on what makes males hot, which covers a good fourth of the magazine – this alone makes Cake or Death seem like the newest teeny-bopper cum magazine. Otherwise, Cake or Death is at the top of the heap in terms of being a quick read, having a sharp intellect through all pieces, and never seeming at the least to be re-hashing what I had seen in last month’s Clamor or Punk Planet. Here’s to hoping that Cake or Death has a long, successful run! If you still are not sure about how great this zine is, just look up the adventures of the Bombastard in this issue, and you will be won over.
