Star Trek: Conquest / 2007 Bethesda / http://www.bethsoft.com / http://startrek.bethsoft.com /

It feels good getting games in for the Wii. “Star Trek: Conquest” is the second game that we here at NeuFutur have had the chance to review, and it is a hell of a second game to play. The intense graphics that are in-game (rather than cinematics or other fluff) push the Wii to their limits, especially when one gets into a massive battle with a large number of ships. The game play places individuals back in the Star Trek: The Next Generation era (but can be seen as taking place during the Deep Space Nine era, as individuals can play in-game as the Dominion and the Dominion-supporting Breen). The style of the game reminds me of a Risk or other similar strategy game.

Individuals try to control the entire galazy (the board) by fighting over specific positions. Whenever you encroach on a system that is not yours, you will be catapulted into battle. Building up your fleet is the integral part of the game, as is conducting research that will bring your race or group more money, ships, and ability. The graphics are bright and, while not at a cutting-edge, they are very strong for a Wii game. The turn-based game play ensures that individuals can spend some serious hours getting every one of the systems under their control. Taking control of larger or smaller forces ensure that there are different levels of difficulty in the game. The only thing that seems weak in any aspect would be the story in the game. Sure, every group wishes to control the largest possible realm, but there is nothing much else past that.

With the rich Star Trek mythos, I would like to have something resembling the plot of a Star Trek episode interspersed into each different subsystem, dependent on how individuals are doing. Regardless, there is enough in the way of a story to keep individuals interested, and the lack of story is ameliorated by the fact that the game play is so fulfilling. Having the game for the Wii provides RPG and strategy players with another title to conquer, and ensures that the Wii can be used for something besides sports sims and goofy party types of games. If you are a fan of Star Trek, or of Risk-style board games, Star Trek: Conquest is the game that you should pick up. Also available for the PS2.
