(Los Angeles) The triumphant, across-the-board rise of Ky-Mani Marley with Vox Music Group album Radio grows even stronger in 2008 as the son of global musical icon Bob Marley establishes his own style and profile as a notable contemporary musical artist. Although the radio add date for his new single “The March” isn’t until January 22, the track already tops the Rap Singles Sales chart at #1, jumped to #3 on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales chart and #5 on the trade’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Sales chart, a grassroots swell that indicates an artist on the verge of a major break-out.
Meanwhile, Marley continues to receive ever-increasing spins at Rhythmic, Alternative and Urban radio, playing on such major stations as Power 105.1in New York City, Hot 104.7 in Modesto, CA, E93 in Savannah, GA, 100.1 The Beat in Columbia, SC, M 99.5 in Palm Springs, CA, KNDA 102.9 in Corpus Christi, TX, Jammin’ 97.9 in Salinas, CA and 103.5 The Bomb in Sacramento, CA. On college radio, Marley has scored on CMJ’s Hip-Hop, World and Rhythmic charts, and was featured on the cover of the November issue of CMJ/New Music Report, which hails Radio as “a melting pot of dancehall grooves and urban capped off with Marley’s intense voice.”
The album also remains firmly ensconced in the Top 5 of the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart 15 weeks after debuting at #1, Ironically, Ky-Mani has been trading chart positions with both his father and brother Stephen, further proving the strength and artistic variety within the formidable Marley family musical legacy as he comes into his own on Radio.
A video for “The March” will also be released in early 2008. Marley has already enjoyed video channel play for the “One Time” clip on Music Choice, MTV Jams, VH1 Soul and BET J.
After receiving standing ovations and critical acclaim from the very first show as the opener for the historic reunion tour by Van Halen with David Lee Roth tour last fall, Marley rejoins Van Halen through early April as the hard rock legends pack America’s biggest arenas. One of the highlights of Marley’s sets on the tour has been “The March,” on which USA Today proclaims “he flashed his own charismatic side by enthralling the crowd” with the song, “a hip-hop/reggae hybrids that juxtaposed the war in Iraq with street violence.” Marley will also be playing select headlining club dates as well.
Marley not only boasts broad-based musical appeal but also has been making multimedia mark as a critically-acclaimed actor in a number of independent films while debuting last fall as a TV star in his own reality series on BET J., “Living the Life of Marley.” The show, which follows Ky-Mani as he recorded Radio and now promotes the album, has been picked up for a second season by the cable channel.
