Slug #229 / Free / 1:156 / 84M / http://www.slugmag.com /

Slug feels heavier with this issue. The amount of advertisements that is in this issue feels a little lighter, as well. This time, there are a number of strong pieces. Of particular note this time has to be the piece that features an interview with such low-budget movie luminaries as George Romero, Lloyd Kaufman and Bruce La Bruce. This interview takes place more like a roundtable than anything, and gets in the minds of these three producers, showing individuals what is good and bad with contemporary cinema. The top 5 lists of everyone on Slug’s staff is nice as well, but the strongest pieces are those that are always strong – the lengthy reviews that are present as well as the features conducted with local bands and independent businesspeople. The fiction pieces that are present in this issue have declined, but have been replaced with what has to be one of the most memorable pieces ever placed in Slug – a listing of the author’s 5 most memorable hangovers. The same use of colors during this issue provide individuals with more than enough distractions to the text, lengthening the run time that one can experience from this issue. Where other magazines would start to repeat themselves after so many issues focusing on the same city and general topics, Slug somehow finds ways with each issue to keep things interesting and individuals wanting to read subsequent issues of the magazine. Send Slug a few dollars and get caught up with what is happening in Salt Lake City.
