An anarchist zine with the outside look of a perzine, The Female Species is a much longer read than the 20 pages would have individuals think. A lot of pieces in this issue are no longer than one or two pages, but their respective writers are talented enough to make brevity a strength. This issue contains a lot of detached quotes from the litany of anarchist thinkers, including stalwarts Bakunin and Goldman. Discussions about the problematic nature of religion are in this issue, informing individuals that churches need to be abolished, but as a number of publications, do not prescribe any method for accomplishing this largest goal. The Female Species’ also gains some momentum with the very interesting collages contained in this issue, a mixture of media and text that is incredibly political. Other pieces, such as different ways to fight the system with organizations, inform adequately but a little Spartanly. For example, I would know how to pulse and swarm, but I would rather have some individuals who have tried it to tell us the effectiveness of some tactic like that. What is probably the best piece in the magazine is the fiction with a grain of truth piece in “A Typical Bad Day For a New Generation”, which illuminates some of the problems with implanted ID chips. An interesting read, almost perfect in their brevity, but with some minor issues that are relatively minor.
