Here’s What I’ve Hidden Under My Tongue #1 / $1 / :10 / 28S / D.J.T., 108 Route 30, Newfane, VT 05345 /

DJT’s zines are always some of the most emotionally affecting that I have the chance to read, and this time deals with eir dealings with diet, both before and after hormonal therapy. In the inaugural issue of this zine, the societal construct of what it is to be an “attractive” male or female is explored and a personal side of this hormonal treatment is show. DJT’s best foot during this issue is with eir covering the mentality shift that is a result from the treatments. The inclusion of some information about DJT’s life really sets the stage for the effect that society has on the minds of a number of children, all equally impressionable. The weight of society and the promulgation of images that do nothing besides wreck the self-esteem of children the world-round. “Under My Tongue” also shows the problem with the mental health care in this country, prescribing a doctrine of avoidance regarding self-destructive behaviours. The one great thing about this magazine is that DJT seems to want to continue these important discussions; the #1 on the cover hopefully portends many more issues to come. The inclusion of quotes from a litany of counter-culture and obscure books only make the points raised in DJT’s narrative that much more salient; it also provides a jumping-off point if one would like to get a little more information on the topic. For fans of both perzines and exposes on what is fucked up with this society, Here’s What I’ve Hidden Under My Tongue is equally good in both arenas.
