High Maintenance #2 ($3, PO Box 63022, Philadelphia, PA 19114-0822)

Another of the glossy zines that I always tend to get for review, this one is actually not that bad. Interspersing heavy musical content with different approaches, High Maintenance makes it easy for the average reader to get through the magazine in just under an hour, and without stopping to put the zine. Highlights of this issue include the listing of the top 50 music videos of all time without much bias (except for being slightly-brit heavy) and a discussion of the Kaiju Big Battel (people in monster outfits wrestling/fighting). While the interviews (Glen Phillips, Mull Historical Society, Matt Frewer) seem to be very long, the questions are Spartan and the answers kept down to a reasonable minimum. The layout of this full-sized zine is like background music – easily noticed but definitely does not clash with the text above it. All and all, a zine that far surpasses most that are laid out to this degree, almost attaining the rank of Alarm-quality.
