The Greatest Stars of Wrestlemania / 2008 WWE / 6 Hours / http://www.wwe.com /

“The Greatest Stars of Wrestlemania” is a Wal-Mart exclusive DVD, and it showcases a number of classic Wrestlemania matches from the last 17 or so years. While there are not any matches from Wrestlemanias I through VI, the star power is not affected in any way. Anyone that would be within the top five or ten individuals that you would immediately associated with WWE – whether it be “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock, Huck Hogan, or The Undertaker – are present. One cannot blame the WWE for the exclusion of earlier matches  – Wrestlemania XXIV is coming up in about a month and they want to showcase a number of stars that are still active in the WWE.

That means that matches such as John Cena Vs. JBL (from Wrestlemania 21) and Chris Jericho Vs. Triple H (Wrestlemania X8) are present. Of course, some of the matches feature talent that, for whatever reason (retiring, passing on or moving on) is not with the company at the current:  these matches include Bret Hart Vs. Yokozuna (Wrestlemania X) and Kurt Angle Vs. Rey Mysterio Vs. Randy Orton. Regardless of what strategy the WWE ultimately followed when putting together this DVD, the quality of matches that are present are impressive. Without going into 3 or 4 disc territory, I feel that the DVD captures a great deal of the most memorable Wrestlemania matches of the last 17 years. Of course, fans may lament the fact that the slamming of Andre the Giant by Hulk Hogan is not present on here, but to be honest, the match itself was not all that impressive after the hype surrounding it died down.

This disc will likely serve two of the WWE’s goals: it will get individuals interested in obtaining the full Wrestlemanias from which these tracks were culled, and it will help to increase the buyrate for the upcoming iteration of Wrestlemania. I have no doubt that there will be a number of these DVDs flying off of store shelves, so it will also help WWE’s bottom line. If this DVD set goes and accomplishes WWE’s purposes, I would really like to see them do much of the same with the Royal Ruble, Summerslam, and even “B-shows” like No Way Out and defunct shows like “In Your House”. DFor some of the best matches that the WWE has to offer, check out “The Greatest Stars of Wrestlemania”.
