Alvin and the Chipmunks: Go To The Movies –Funny We Shrunk The Adults / 2008 Paramount / 66 minutes / http://www.paramount.com /

The second of our two Alvin and the Chipmunks reviews, this iteration of “Go To The Movies” has a total of three episodes present. For individuals that have a partial collection and want to know what episodes are present, this collection has “Back To Alvin’s Future”, “Bigger”, and “Funny, We Shrunk The Adults”. This may be the only time that I have ever said it, but the titles of these episodes are completely accurate at describing what happens in the episode.

Sure, you have to have seen the movies that these titles are parodying, but individuals should feel confident that if they remember n episode of the eighties version of Alvin and the Chipmunks that was a play on Back To The Future, that it was probably “Back To Alvin’s Future”. In much the same way, “Bigger” parodies “Big”, and “Funny We Shrunk The Adult” parodies the Rick Moranis vehicle “Honey, We Shrunk The Kids”. While I can understand the allure of Paramount releasing three episodes from the series at a time like this, I think that there should be a focus on releasing full series of the show, with the episodes oriented in the way that they were originally aired. Still, it makes sense for Paramount to oriented in this way, so they can get a number of buys before they eventually put out a comprehensive set.

While this is a great bit of film that has not been present in DVD previously, I would like to see Paramount take that next step forward and open their vaults, releasing the complete run of better and lesser known shows until that point when DVD ends its life as a viable storage medium. Then, when everyone has moved over to Blu-Ray, individuals can then re-buy the versions that Paramount has packaged on that format.  Still, pick up this DVD, and pick up the original “Go To The Movies”, which included Star Wreck, a Star Trek parody, and Batmunk, a parody of Batman. In much the same way, here’s hoping that Paramount releases “Daytona Jones” and “Robomunk” in the months and years to come. This is a must buy for any steadfast fans of Alvin and the Chipmunks or of eighties cartoons in general.
