Maggot-Zine #2 / Half-Sized / 104 Pages / $2.50 ($5.00 by Mail) / 23 Veteran’s Drive, Fredericton, NB, E3A 4C4 Canada /

Even after I got the less-than-stellar review by Broken Pencil a few months ago in their publications, I still got a trade in the mail by Candace, from Maggot-Zine. Now, my exposure to intelligently written ‘zines, or even zines that are done outside the United States are usually pretty rare, so I made sure to read Maggot-Zine over and over. Candace and eir friends go to see a lot of shows in the Fredericton area, and Abolishit comes up in about 6 different reviews. The reviews are just little capsules of full reviews, and I feel like I’m losing a little bit in the translation, but it could be due to the sheer length of the reviews compared to mine – I try to have at least 400 words a band, and Candace and eir writers usually top out at about 100, without too much in the way of information excised. Maggot-Zine is what my other zine InterStitial tries to be – a music-based zine with a heavy focus on politics, whether it be about feminism or globalization or any other of the many topics that Maggot-Zine covers. And while the zine might seem like your local cut and paste job, the fact here is that some major interviews lie within – not the indie flavour of the week, but large name, continual stars like The Dwarves and Gwar. As one can notice, this zine is not short by any stretch of the imagination, and I would say that $5 would be a pittance to pay, compared with a lot of other zines that charge that much but bring much less in content, due to the heavy focus on advertising budget. A lot of the information in the zine might be old, as Candace says that ey finally got a chance to put it together, but a fun read nonetheless.
