July 2000, $3. There are tons of pages to this rag. What is really excellent is that this magazine has top tens for everything they do- I love top ten lists! Most of the bands I’ve never heard of are on these lists, which is always a good thing. After the beginning few pages of typical stuff, 6 pages of uninterrupted ads follow, with 5 pages of letters following that! There seems to be no lack of space with Maximum Rocknroll, as there are 5 pages of ads, 17 pages of opinion pieces. Mykal Board defends the institutions of smoking, and defends the rights of people to have guns. Lots of the columns have the tendency to run together, whether it be about going to the dentist, or a guy in a punk band. Renae Bryant’s 5 min interview” is one of the high points in this mountain of mediocre garbage, detailing the story about a foreign student and a dead duck. “Rall Deal”, by Ted Rall” isn’t that bad at all, attacking the fallacy that more taxes will lower the damages caused by such things. “Take my Life Please” is an interesting piece about a video game stuntman. “Scumbag File” has an interview about a former bootlegger that really gives the reader some insight into the world of bootlegging. As with all her articles, Christine from Slug & Lettuce never fails to inspire the masses. The scene report about Buenos Aires is very well written, with tons of bands and good descriptions of everything. The news is very detailed and fun to read, being from newspapers. 22 pages of interviews with bands I’ve never heard of, a fact list about the wear in Columbia, and then tons of reviews to finish off the magazine. .
