Media Whore #5 / $2 / 36M / :20 / http://www.mediawhorezine.com /

Media Whore is one of the few feminist zines that I’ve had the chance to ready latly. The only other ‘zine that I could compare Media Whore to is the B.L.O.O.D. manifesto, which admittedly is a few steps to the revolutionary side farther than Media Whore. Still, there is an informative (instead of purely anger/emotion-drive) approach to revolution; many zines (not just feminist in nature) lose their focus and a number of potential converts when individuals let emotion take over. The staff of writers at Media Whore keep this emotion in check and bring forth information like “Mourning the Loss of a Good Lady”, which describes in detail about the closing of a feminist-oriented record label, Mr. Lady. Other information-driven pieces, such as “Taking Back The News” is empowering in the sense that many individuals just do not know about the efforts that Emily Brandt has made in the last few years about trying to show the prevalence of rape through an up-front project that collects “survival stories…(who) were willing to come forward and share their stories with the public”. The “Games That Give Girls A Fighting Chance” is the only errant piece in the entire issue; while the premise is clear (that there are positive-image games with lead female characters) the writing leaves a little to be desired (for its four pages, the piece only covers three different games). Finally, the zine review section is perhaps the pinnacle of information-driven pieces for Media Whore; by allowing individuals to network with other zines and individuals, the revolution can become more united and strong in numbers. Overall, a great zine with a tremendously positive message.
