Slug #232 / Free / 84M / http://www.slugmag.com /

After missing out on an issue for review (Stupid Spring Break and other commitments), we here at NeuFutur have another shot at reviewing this publication. As is usual, there is a Salt Lake City-heavy approach to the zine. The advertisement are large in number, but they contribute to the overall feeling of the issue, being for local events, record labels, bars, and stores. Acts, skateboarders, musicians, and the like that are covered here all have a Utah / SLC focus. However, the quirkiness of this issue is slightly less than it has been in the past. Sure, there are some strong points, but this is an interesting trend. Regardless of how the magazine has changed over the issues, there are still some interesting pieces to be had. Individuals that are into music can learn about two up and coming acts – Royal Abbey and Schwa Grotto. People more into sport can pick up on the US Freeskiing Nationals, as well as “The Paparazzi Hipster Jam”. The reviews are still amazing as per usual, giving individuals more than enough reason to purchase (or to ignore) a book, CD, game, or movie that is coming out in the near future. The “gold star” award this time goes to “It’s 4:20, Bro”. This article, done by Mike Brown, discusses the break between those individuals that wish to see pot legalized and those individuals that just smoke it quietly. If those individuals that have pot bumper stickers on their car would just stop mystifying the stuff, the chance that it could conceivably be decriminalized would decrease, and the chance that they would be picked up would be much less (since they aren’t so skittery when the law comes).  Slug is still the best locale-oriented zine out there; send them a few bucks and see what I’m talking about.
