THE COAL MEN RETURN TO STUDIO TO WORK ON THIRD ALBUM

Nashville Roots Rock Band Head Out On Tour Next Month in Advance of New Release

Nashville, TN—Nashville based roots rock band The Coal Men are heading into the studio this month to work on their third album, the follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2007 release, Beauty Is a Moment.  The band will then set off on tour throughout the Southeast, Northeast and Midwest.

Some people measure life in years, front man Dave Coleman of The Coal Men measure it in moments. And capturing the impact of a moment is what the singer, guitarist and principal songwriter of The Coal Men sets out to do with each new recording.  On Beauty is a Moment, Coleman and his band mates (bassist Jason “Hitch” Hitchcock and drummer Dave Ray) were able to capture those moments on tape.  Recorded at Brian Carter’s Paradox Studios in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the album was recorded with Carter’s collection of vintage amplifiers, tube pre-amps, microphones and a 16-track Ampex analog tape machine—giving it a warm sound that is the perfect medium to deliver Coleman’s slices of Americana along with his rich, warm vocals.

Beauty also represents The Coal Men’s full range of capabilities, from delicate acoustic styling to straight-out rock, with a touch of country twang that hints at the band’s Southern roots. Most of all, it’s a collaboration of talents. In the past year, longtime friends Coleman, Hitch, and Ray brought on friends – and seasoned performers – Chris Frame (Son Volt) on guitar and Jen Gunderman (The Jayhawks, Dag) on keyboards. Together, the five perform with the assurance of musicians who’ve spent many a long night together.

Ultimately, though, the album rests on the songs honed by Coleman and friends Carter Little (Saddlesong), Milan Miller (The Wrights, Jubal Foster), Robert Reynolds (The Mavericks), and Mark Winchester (Brian Setzer Orchestra, Emmylou Harris).  The dozen tracks on Beauty show a definite maturing for Coleman.

“The Coal Men are one of my favorite Nashville bands.  Leader Dave Coleman writes brilliantly and sings with soulful conviction.  The striking imagery is in the new album’s title tune: lyrics equaled by its fuzz-tone undertow bass line, slashing electric guitars, pounding percussion and sizzling organ/piano work.  These folks deserve stardom, people.” –Robert K. Oermann, Music Row Magazine

“The Coal Men have risen from the ranks of Nashville up-and-comers to a spot as one of Music City’s strongest, nerviest rock acts.”—Peter Cooper, The Tennessean
