The Kite Runner / 2008 Dreamworks / 127 Minutes / http://www.kiterunnermovie.com /

Individuals that have focused on the New Yok Times Bestseller list know that this work, written by Khaled Hosseini, charted pretty high after it was released all the way back in 2003. Readers of NeuFutur, both print and online, may also know that we covered and reviewed the soundtrack for the 2007 film, created by Alberto Iglesias. As one could guess, the music that was on this soundtrack comes forth in various forms during the DVD for The Kite Runner, released by Dreamworks Video.

The film scans a decent period of time, giving individuals a view into the years when the Soviets ruled Afghanistan and ending really when the Taliban took control of the region. Individuals are given more than enough in the way of information, despite the fact that a number of individuals will be separated from the action presented in the film in two ways: they have no experience with Afghanistan, and they have no experience with the years that are covered in the movie (or, they were too young to really understand what was going on during these years).

Viewers of The Kite Runner that may want to get a little bit more in the way of an education regarding the context of the film would do well to look at the film’s extras. This means that viewers can turn on the commentary track, which provided me with a tremendous amount of insight into a culture that I really did not understand even after watching the movie twice (once in the movie theaters and once on DVD). Individuals are given even more in the way of information when they watch the two featurettes that are also present on this DVD, which eschews much of the cultural and story-related discussion that was presented during the commentary for a more nitty gritty type of discussion of the film. Taken all together, the number of additional materials that are on this DVD ensure that individuals both with have a better value in purchasing this disc and will be able to understand better the motivations of the actors in the film. If you liked the book or happened to hear the soundtrack before watching the film, this DVD is a must buy. The DVD is also a must buy if you are a student of politics in this region, and have little to understand why individuals acted a certain way outside of history books and dry articles.
