Walt Disney Classic Caballeros Collection: Saludos Amigos / The Three Caballeros / 2008 Disney / 113 Minutes / http://www.disneydvd.com /

It seems as if Disney has tried to tap other markets in the last fifteen to twenty years. This means that there was a specific ploy for individuals in the Middle East with a movie like Aladdin, the Chinese for Mulan, and of course, the Atlanteans for The Little Mermaid. I’m kidding about the last one, but the “Classic Cabelleros Collection” is a great way to involve the Spanish-Speaking and Latino/a markets. This is due to the fact that there are Spanish language tracks and subtitles available during both of these films (for what it’s worth, there are also subtitles and language tracks in French).

Despite the fact that there are already two movies that are present on this DVD, there are a number of extras that will make the value of this disc well beyond that of other similar DVDs. This means that there is a featurette called “Disney: South of the Border”, that provides individuals a little insight into what the brand has done and how it has been received in Mexico and Latin American countries. For adults, there is an interview featuring Walt Disney from the CBC, and for the kids, there are two bonus shorts – “Don Donald” and “Contrary Condor” – that will further increase the replay value of this DVD. Disney is on to something here – by releasing older movies in a “value” format, they are able to capitalize on money sources that had previously dried up as well as provide Disney fans the opportunity to capture both of these forms in this format.

This is also smart for Disney, as the life cycle of the DVD is drawing to a close, and a greater, more comprehensive set featuring these films could be released for the Blu-Ray in just a few short years. Everyone wins here, and films that have gradually been forgotten will be back in the public’s eye. The movies themselves have a sharp, crisp look to them, while the audio is as clear as when the films were originally released. There is nothing that is missing from this package, and “Classic Caballeros Collection” should be the blueprint for the direction that Disney takes for its value packs in the months and years to come.
