Fake Life #7 / $2 / :45 / 32M / http://www.pxsdistro.com / [email protected]

I had the chance to review Fake Life #6 a few months ago. I got this issue just a few days ago and dove right in. This issue seems a little more hit and miss than #6, starting out with Rob’s “The Fool’s Way”. This piece deals with Rob’s trials and tribulations in love, with Rob randomly going off on a number of tangents. The shift from typed to handwritten text in this article marks a punctuation, and does not really provide a good kick start to the momentum that Fake Life needs to succeed. It is during the interview that is done with Gus Fink that this issue takes off; while I’m not familiar with Fink’s work beyond what is placed in this issue, I really want to look Fink up further. LJ’s “The Road Home” is just not given enough space; I understand that the characters are dead and cannot come back to life, but things seem to be dark and murky, without much in the way of discussion, throughout this piece. Rob’s “Schadeufreude” is an interesting rant/discussion about the early days of evolution, meandering from animal to animal until ey discusses the time that eir brother shat when ey puked. The interviews in this issue are strong, the how-to piece (how to make a bong out of a pop can) are fun and funny, but there are a few weak pieces here. Still, one cannot beat $2 for this much solid material. Pick up an issue.
