Your Vegas – A Town And Two Cities / 2008 Universal Republic / 10 Tracks / http://www.yourvegasmusic.com /

Your Vegas came to their current lineup with Mark Heaton in 2004, and released two singles – a self-titled song and “Flybuzz”. While the band had broke it big in their home country of England, they did not attract the attention of the American music market until 2006, when Universal Republic signed them. The average music fan became aware of Your Vegas soon after, when Playboy magazine tapped them to be a “Rock The Rabbit” band. The band got their stuff together and put an EP out – “A Town And Two Cities”, expanding it soon after to a full length recording.

“In My Head” is the single that most individuals will first cut their teeth on, and it showcases a smart indie type of approach. The vocals link together The Killers and Morrissey, while the guitars and drums create an atmosphere that is reminiscent of a Coldplay or a Radiohead. What results is something that is unique to the band themselves, but is also rooted quite deeply in the works of popular acts of the last ten years. “Birds of Paradise” is another strong track, pushing forth the vocals to a dominant place on the track. The guitar, scaled back as it is, still provides the proper highlighting and mood for which the vocals to work off.

The emotive approach of Your Vegas during this track will undoubtedly bring fans to their cause. However, “It Makes My Heart Break” is the track that will bring Your Vegas further into the spotlight. The best thing, in my opinion, about Your Vegas has to be their ability to create a compelling track with little more than a guitar, drums, and vocals. Hints of a timelessness – a timelessness that is similar in style to early U2 or Depeche Mode – are pervasive in the 10 cuts on “A Town And Two Cities”. The act has a stellar future ahead of them, and while individuals may want something a little harder from their rock bands, there is something for virtually anyone that has the chance to tune in to the album. Check them live, pick out this album, and make an effort to familiarize themselves with what will be the next big thing in rock music.
