For fans of Code Lyoko, Fall of X.A.N.A. fits in to the story arc that was covered by the 4th season. The goal of players is to ensure that William is freed from being enthralled to the X.A.N.A. virus, and to also vanquish the Volcano Replika. The style of Code Lyoko : Fall of X.A.N.A. is a blend of RPG-styles that are more turn-based and Zelda-like in their application. The graphics themselves represent a blend of styles in much the same way, whether it be the animation style that is present in the show or a more traditional type of RPG model rendering.

“Fall of X.A.N.A.” allows players to walk around freely, being stopped by static enemies. As is the case with a number of RPGs, fights allow the player to attack, use a power, use a function, or an item from one’s inventory. After a player finishes the storyline of the single-player mode, there is a multiplayer mode that will allow two players that have the game to play against each other in a number of different types of combat, which will show once and for all which person has the better party. These four multiplayer modes – bet, challenge, normal, and handicap – give further replay value to a game that will already have players sitting at the edge of their seats. For the possible players that have not kept up with the show, or have not had the chance to watch the show in the past, The Game Factory has really done a good job in providing more than enough in the way of information up front, to ensure that there is little, if any, in the way of a learning curve.

In much the same way, the game play makes sure that the Everyone tag that the ESRB has placed on the game reflects reality. While having a Code Lyoko game may not be seen as the coolest thing for older individuals, the storyline, customizability, and game play is impressive enough that any true lover of RPGs should swallow their pride, plop down their $30, and pick up a copy of the game today. Game Factory Games has a great game on their hands, and I hope that they can release a follow-up, tweaking only minor things, in a short time frame in the months to come.
