Razorcake #11 – For a zine that seems to be one that fits into the Maximumrocknroll/Flipside mold, Razorcake has content that will let you read and read without getting tired. The material in the magazine has so much more personality and flavor than any of the other major zines, with pieces including a pseudo tour diary, a trip to the Rikki Lake show, and much else. The first half of the zine reads more like a perzine than a typical glossy “punk” zine, and even the typical interviews read more easily than the dry ones encountered in countless other zines. Also, having a Nardwuar interview should increase the stock of your zine by seven or eight times. However, just like many of the glossies I’ve encountered, the set-up of the zine is personal pieces followed by many interviews and reviews end it. I think that if things weren’t so rigidly constructed in this magazine, the chance that someone would actually get through it on their first reading would be much higher. Otherwise, Razorcake is a zine people should look out for, as it can entertain more thoroughly than Punk Planet, MRR, or any of those other zines.
