Read #23 / $3 / Full-Sized / 100 Pages / POB 3437, Astoria, NY 11103 / [email protected] / http://www.readmag.com /

Another great issue. That is all I should say about it. With high points coming with two of the members of Reno 911 as well as an off-kilter interview with Lagwagon (ending with “Why did you interview me? Do you even like any of my bands.”), Read continues the high standards that have been a hallmark of the magazine for years now. Other excellent reads come with the double-tandem of interviews with individuals from Tough Crowd, comedians Greg Giraldo and former Opie and Anthony star Jim Norton, as well as the Kittenpants interview with the homosexual metal band Pink Steel. While the zine as a whole has moved from the personal read it was during the work issue, the simple fact is that the content of the issue is nearly as compelling as it has been. While some of the pieces do not work as well as they may have been expected to, especially with the reviews of movies and cds that they haven’t seen or heard. A certain asshole-like quality permeates these sections, in what usually is a goofy type of read. In this issue, conspiracies, such as the Masons and the mythology behind the dollar bill, are dissected in a way that only READ can render. While the issue is still done at a high quality for zines in general, this issue seems a little off after the work issue. I’m sure with the craziness Adam can render, Read will rebound into being one of the best zines around yet again.
