Revolutionthrash #1 / :25 / $1 or trade / 36 Pages / [email protected] / Revolution Thrash, 100 Beach Street Room A-716, Boston MA 02116 /

The first zine done by Ryan is actually a hit. Crammed full of information, Revolutionthrash is still clean, clear, and concise. Not really comfortable fitting into any one genre of music or zine, Ryan goes a little interview heavy for this issue. Instead of having 25 word or so reviews that don’t tell anyone anything about a band, Revolutionthrash goes into extreme detail, especially during “Alex’s Reviews”. Throughout, pictures are sharply reproduced and are of actual concerts that seem interesting, instead of the usual blurry pictures of comatose bands. The few non-interview, non-review pieces are hit or miss, with “Decline of Western Civilization” being a scattershot rant about how society is fucked up, and the Peru Underground Report being an extremely concise and Spartan discussion of the Peru scene. While I was not familiar with any of the bands that Ryan interviews in this issue, the subject matter is non-specific enough that individuals are able to make some sort of connection with the bands, even if there are some problems with the responses by the bands primarily being done by individuals who don’t have English as a native language. No space is wasted in Revolutionthrash, and for a first issue, I couldn’t have wanted any more from this. Here’s to hoping that Ryan and the gang can go and make another issue relatively soon, instead of the “years” that it took Ryan to make this one. Political, personal, musical, this zine has it all and can keep things from being inexorably muddled, as is the case with most zines that try to reach so high.
