Smile When You’re Alone is indie-folk rock band, This Car Up’s debut release, recorded at Inner Ear Studios by T.J. Lipple of Aloha. The five-piece, hailing from Allston, Ma, came together in the fall of 2007 eager to create music that was moving and beautiful. Singers/guitarists Eric Glassman and Paul Sentz became a duo through an open-mic night and friends due to their love of burritos and turkey. The band slowly expanded into who they are today, gaining the drumming expertise of Barry Marino, bass and Star Wars knowledge of Kevin MacDonald, and Kurt Schneider on keys/acoustic guitar/electronic gadgets.
For over a year now, This Car Up has done extensive tours of the Mid-West and the East Coast, have performed at such venues as Trash Bar, Great Scott, TT the Bears, Middle East and have played with artists including Headlights, Aloha, Via Audio, and Only Son (of The Moldy Peaches).
Boston Phoenix: “In their short existence, they’ve made quite a rep for themselves, thanks to exuberant live shows bolstered by big horn sections, smooth Casiotones, ample on-stage antics, and the sort of hyper-genuine indie pop that might be boring if it weren’t played with such clear-eyed conviction.”
88.9 fm WERS: “There exists an unusual power in this “collective,” in their ability to construct beautifully crafted, massive, and heartfelt songs in an extremely organic manner.”
NE Performer: “Ultimately, the band’s most exciting quality is the disarming unpredictability of their sound.”
Dig This Real:“…you know they are playing exactly what we want; something to be passionate about, something to feel. This Car Up gives that to you and loves every minute of it.”
