Sex, Death, and Ronald McDonald Volume 3, Issue 22 (Fall 2002) / $1 / Full-Sized / 12 Pages / Vermicious Knid, Lupine Ladies Press, PO Box 543 / Accokeek, MD 20607

Yet another issue of SDRM by my buddy, Vermicious Knid! This issue, the focus has completely shifted from the number of other SDRM issues that I have read, to what VK called flash fiction – what I assume is fiction written at a quick pace (please tell me if this is wrong). The stories run the gamut from being amusing to being “what the hell? As usual, the art that accompanies the stories (all art here is done by a different artist than the story on that specific page.) Much more pleasant to see is greater use of the white space by these stories (I understand that it is hard sometimes to make poetry fit the page without it seeming cramped or something), and the just the wide range of fonts, backgrounds, and pieces of art that Vermicious Knid uses. The topics of these stories are pretty grounded in realism, with stories dealing about “a girlfriend who was thrilled to have a “Latino” boyfriend”, an odd individual who paints everything pink, and about a girl that is immensely self-doubting. However, the stories that defy explanation really are out there, including a story about a fighting chicken killing an individual and a firefly meeting. All and all, these stories are written in enough different styles and with different enough topics that the zine is incredibly fun to read. Nota Bene : SDRM will not be all Flash Fiction, nor will it be all poetry. SDRM will alternate between the two.
