This is a novel premise for a ‘zine, with Kelly showing the best things that happened during 101 of eir days. Where the zine itself is not the most interesting of layouts (pretty much just a normal font with pictures interspersed in random intervals, the material inside provides all the interest that one needs. In fact, the different days really begin to paint a picture about what encompasses Kelly’s life. The way that Kelly tells a story even in just the space of a paragraph demarcating eir day is beyond comparison; what is one of eir strongest suits is the fact that things are laid out and finished up all in the space of 80 words. The only sad thing about this magazine is that 101days (almost a third of the year) can go by without anything major happening to someone. There are what I would call major events described in this issue, but Kelly has the quality to really make them seem normal parts of eir day. Sure, there may be one good thing that happens to Kelly every day (even if it might be a stretch to come up with anything positive) but there seems to be a certain episodic quality to Kelly’s life, to really everyone’s life that is very depressing even with the upbeat tempo of the zine. Still, even with the crushing weight of the monotony of everyday life, this issue of Shortandqueer is adequately positive to make someone happy through the entirety of their day.
