After the stellar “Beer Issue” the last time out, it seems like this issue of Slug has some big shoes to fill. The eclectic nature of this issue creates a nice contrast to what was a very coherent outing last time. Of particular note during this issue has to be their coverage of different music genres. Drone/doom/whatever rock is covered with Gavin Hoffman’s interview of Japanese act Boris, while the issue’s cover piece is about the Utah ska scene, of which most individuals will remember one band – Stretch Armstrong. Finally, there is an objective and honest piece that discusses the juggalo scene in Salt Lake City, ensuring that practically anyone in a sub-category has something to chew on. The non-music pieces, which include the typical heavy focus on skateboarding (skate reviews, discussions of new skate parks, and interviews with local skaters. I was shocked to see that the “Beer Reviews” piece (done by Tyler Mackmel) continued into this piece (a good shock, for sure), while the only recurring pieces to be on the slightly weaker side than previous issue were “Dear Dickheads” and “The Inversion Trawler”. Regardless, there are more than enough solid pieces in this issue to more than hold a candle to the amazing beer-themed issue that came out with the last go-around. As is usual, if the pieces in this issue sound interesting to you (check out the Dwarves interview if you want to see something funny and compelling), send Slug a few bucks and I’m sure that they will send you a few copies of their ‘zine.
