Skeptic Vol. 12 No.2 / $5.95 / 2:00 / 100M / http://www.skeptic.com /

I picked this magazine up from the 2006 American Atheist conference, and while it is a pretty glossy and large circulation magazine, it is not something that the average reader of NeuFutur would be familiar with. This is a magazine that will take listeners a good chunk of time to finish; the overall theme of the magazine is to disprove the hard to believe or explain. The pieces work on a number of levels; while most of the articles in this issue work at a high-school or higher level, there are specific pieces (such as the Mythbusters DIY piece) that will be extremely salient for the pre-high school age readership, The layout is fairly simple and classically based; don’t look to be excited with new and interesting layouts with this issue of Skeptic. However, the amount of research that is done for the average piece in this issue of Skeptic is the nearest thing to truly academic writing that independent media has. What may just be the best reason to pick up this magazine is the fact that a lot of somewhat-urban legends are debunked here. For example, in this issue along, the writers at Skeptic come up against the Omnitron (a device that is supposed to detect all types of rare materials) and Ted Serios, someone that can “seize a fleeting through and materialize it for all to see”. This issue may be a little pricey, but the amount of research that is put into the creation of just one issue of this magazine makes the price a bargain.
