Slug & Lettuce is a magazine that I try to pick up each time I see it available. Sure, I do not know many of the bands that are covered, but Chris’ work in uniting solid zine and CD reviews with intellectual opinion piece is far beyond practically any other magazine out on the market. The zine is short, only touching 20 pages, but the font is perhaps 4 or 5 point, which means a lot of text can be slapped on a page. Of course, there is always hints of the great photographic skills of Chris scattered throughout the magazine. There are a number of advertisements in this newspaper-like magazine, but everything matches well in regards to what the places are selling. The piece “Dog Dayz†details the travails of K9, a “punk rock squatter girlâ€, and is drawn by Fly, who has the most distinct style of art this side of Carrie McNinch. Two pieces in the columns section stand out this time. First off, Ecopunk’s column about maintaining a PMA (positive mental attitude) is what is needed in the dour and depressing world of revolutionary struggle, while Vegan Action’s piece on how to minimize one’s footprint on the earth provides simple ways to cut down one’s impact. One simply cannot beat the cost of Slug & Lettuce, being distributed for free all across the United States (maybe other places as well, but I do not know), and only posting postage to send out. Give it a go if you haven’t already.
