Australian musician, activist and surfer Xavier Rudd’s latest album Dark Shades of Blue comes out in the US on August 19th, and in support of the release, Rudd will embark on a month-long North American tour that kicks off in Aspen CO on August 29th. The headlining dates are bookended by high profile festival appearances at Bumbershoot on September 1, and Austin City Limits on September 28.

A lifelong surfer, Rudd has many fans in the community, so it made perfect sense that fellow surf aficionado Matthew McConaughey tapped Rudd to score his upcoming comedy Surfer, Dude. “When I was first turned on to Xavier’s music, I didn’t say “who is that,” I said “what is that” and I was instantly addicted to the sound and message,” says McConaughey. “He’s one of the most original artists in music today and the score he lays down, like our film, will be anything but typical.”

On the opposite swing of pendulum, Xav also has songs appearing in the upcoming documentaries Highwater and Between the Lines. From acclaimed adventure filmmaker Dana Brown (Step Into Liquid), called “among our most valuable cultural anthropologists” by Vanity Fair, Highwater focuses on Maui’s perfect and deadly North Shore waves. Between the Lines explores the conflict between the surfing lifestyle and the Vietnam War as it documents the very different choices of two surfers whose lives were engulfed by the war.
