Charlie Pickett and the Eggs was a rowdy, raunchy band out of Miami that sounded like it had crawled out of a black-water mangrove swamp off I-95. Pickett sang songs about unfaithful lovers, sex, failed romance, drugs, American wanderers, the bad parts of town and the lower realms. He had more in common with Johnny Thunders than Don Johnson, for sure.” – Tallahassee Democrat

Rising out of the fertile and groundbreaking underground music scene of the Southeast in the early 80’s, CP and the Eggs (and later the MC3) were all motorcycle boots and sneers, and rode a squall of throat-grabbing feedback and Stonesy musical middle fingers. They were as much Thunders and Reed as anything country and their tales of scoring in Miami projects (“Overtown”), cowboy dreams (“A On Horseback”) and laconic survivors’ humor were unlike anything being heard on the nascent college rock circuit.  On the eve of this retrospective release, Bloodshot would like to bring this video for “Overtown” to the attention of those who appreciate all things strange, sketchy and unapologetically punk rock.

Footage of The Eggs spliced with rioting in the notorious Overtown section of Miami fuels this apocalyptic vision that those of a certain age will recognize as the zeitgeist of the Reagan era. Watch it here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpooibsWDvs

Charlie Pickett and his boys took the understanding of roots and rock and morphed and molested it and came up with something utterly original. Their fearless dismissal of stylistic straitjackets was pure punk and emblematic of a time when the rulebook had been tossed out and the possibilities seemed as endless as the horizon Charlie wrote about riding towards. Peter Buck has the final word: “Charlie Pickett is a true believer. He and his gang of Miami gunslingers totally encapsulated the sleazy dark heart of rock and roll.”
