When we first received this wine I was very excited – I love a good Riesling and also I had never had ice wine before this. I wanted to make this moment a special one. I wanted to try it after a fine meal or with a good friend, but I was so anxious to try it I finally broke down and opened it. I had a minor difficulty opening the wine; it had a wax seal over the cork but ultimately opened just fine. When I smelled the cork, it smelled like a common Riesling.

What emanated from the bottle was a little floral with a hint of maybe apple or peach. When I poured it in the glass and let it properly breathe, I got something I didn’t expect. The wine has a very very strong vinegar smell. At this point was a little worried, I thought I wouldn’t like the wine, due to such a strong smell. I finally mustered up the courage to take my first sip, and let me tell you it was heaven.

Most of the Riesling on the market today is a little bitter, and is not really that exciting flavor wise, the style of wine itself best suited for a palette cleanser. This wine though is very sweet and full of flavor, with hints of apricot and peach, and a smooth after taste. I would recommend this wine either by itself or maybe with a light dessert. This is due to the fact that it’s very sweet so I would avoid anything too rich or creamy. This wine typically runs 60-80 dollars and is well worth the price, its 9% alcohol giving it a mild and smooth texture that provides the perfect companion on a cold winter’s night. Drink up, and keep an eye on Inniskillin in the months and years to come.
