Sire recording artist Meaghan Smith is going on tour with Eric Hutchinson (Warner Bros. Records). The newly confirmed direct support slot forced Smith to cancel her recently announced residencies in New York and Los Angeles. The Canadian songstress will still perform in both cities, with a solo showcase tomorrow, November 5th at Downtown L.A.’s Bordello, along with a tour stop December 13th at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom.

Smith, who just completed a tour with Ron Sexsmith, is on the road in support of her four-song CD/DVD, The Cricket’s Quartet, which was released September 16th on Sire Records. Available for purchase via Smith’s website (, online via all major digital retailers, as well as at her shows, the EP is a taste of what’s to come when Smith releases her major-label full length debut, The Cricket’s Orchestra, in early 2009.

The tour with Hutchinson, which visits intimate venues across the country over the next six weeks, is the perfect way to experience this charming newcomer from Halifax, Nova Scotia, in a live setting. The child of a piano-teacher mother and a bass-playing father, Smith devoured old musicals and animated films as a child, and later fell in love with the jazz and big-band music of the ’20s, ’30s, and ’40s. Those early inspirations influenced the timeless quality of the music on The Cricket’s Quartet, which features four songs: “I Know,” “If You Asked Me,” “A Little Love,” and “Drifted Apart.” The EP also features four whimsical videos created by Smith, who has worked as an animator for the past several years.
