BLACK METAL CRUST PUNK: WOE Posts Brand-New DYSTOPIA Cover on Myspace

Hot on the heels of misanthropic black metallers WOE’s overwhelmingly well-received debut album A Spell for the Death of Man (Stronghold Records), mainman C. Grigg has posted a viciously feral cover of crust legends DYSTOPIA’s “Anger Brought by Disease” on the band’s Myspace page. What happens when you take a song already brimming with raw power and hatred, and subject it to a twisted black metal interpretation?

WOE have also lined up several live shows along the East Coast, with more on the way. Catch WOE (with a live lineup featuring members of RUMPELSTILTSKIN GRINDER, XXX MANIAK, and THE GREEN EVENING REQUIEM) at these dates:

What The Press are Saying about A Spell for the Death of Man:

“I’m going to add Philadelphia’s Woe to the top of the overall list because A Spell For The Death Of Man is an awesome album that moves and grooves as much as it slays and kills.” — Metal Maniacs

“…with galloping rhythms and dizzying black riffage, the songs still manage to sound strangely melodic, and in some super abstract sense, kind of poppy. But again, all of this pop and jangle and post rock, is totally tangled up with some seriously dense thrashing and super heavy, blasting black metal. It’s that unlikely mix that makes Woe sound so different, and makes this record so awesome, deftly balancing the grim and the kvlt with the moody and hooky and melodic.” – Aquarius Records

“Unrelenting from the moment the baneful instrumental intro ceases, completely through to the waning notes of the last track, the album is substantial by every account…Oregon and Washington have been usurped in their reign over USBM and it’s in a good way. If Xos and Woe are a sign of things to come, we should all be focusing on the Eastern US seaboard with wide-eyed enthusiasm. _A Spell for the Death of Man_ is a strong endeavor and is brilliant as his first full-length. ” – Chronicles of Chaos

“The guitar set pieces that separate the rampant snare attacks are pure metal magic. Melodies ooze from the chaos in moments of great uplifting riffs and solos. It is a primitivism tempered in sustained creative finesse.” – Live 4 Metal

“What makes the album stand out, then, is the occasional flourish of Americana: The drum and guitar interplay that begins around the 5:10 mark of “Longing Is All That Will Remain,” for example, could have been taken off any number of post-hardcore records, minus the high-pitched screaming vocals. Even that little bit of variety, and the several other nuances waiting to be discovered, is enough to make Woe individualized in among the cloned hordes of U.S. black metal bands. It’s hard to ask anything more of a debut full-length.” – JJ Koczan/Aquarian Weekly
