I still remember when Dr. Katz was first on. I guess I was young enough at this point to not really have the appreciation for the show that I now do, but I found the stand-up comedians on the show to be unfunny and the show overall underwhelming. However, in the years that have followed, I have paid attention to the careers of a number of those individuals that were on the show, whether it be H. Jon Benjamin (Home Movies, Lucy, The Daughter of the Devil), Laura and Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Show), or even Dave Chappelle.

Coming back to the Jonathan Katz-prodded bits of stand up routine is like a breath of fresh air. For fans of the current acts of some of these comedians (which are rounded out with pieces from Denis Leary, Ray Romano, Janeane Garofalo and more), where a number of these comedians were at when they were animated is drastically different from where they are now. For long-time fans of the show, there will be a lot of their best-remembers bits and sketchers missing, but one has to see this more as a “greatest hits” compilation than a comprehensive listing of every place and part of the show. This DVD hovers at about the two hour mark, giving viewers more than enough material to properly understand what the show is about and hopefully will be the impetus that they need to go forth and purchase the much larger, longer, and pricier 13-disc complete series run that was released.

With this DVD and the upcoming season sets of Duckman to look forward to, fans of nineties comedy should have their plates full until that time when MTV finally gets off of their rears and finishes up their DVD sets of The State. Hell, if the year goes well, we may even have a copy of Get A Life on DVD. Until then, buy this DVD and take the plunge: make it a point to go forth and buy the bigger DVD set if what you see on this DVD is something that you can get behind.
