Growing up, I was aware of a number of different “types” of alcohol. For drinkers, there were tequilas, rums, vodkas, and gins. Of course, there were liqueurs, but they really weren’t seen as something that one could get a good buzz going off of. After opening the NeuFutur alcohol section, the alcohol scene became much more nuanced, with different efforts pushing the boundaries. Boca Loca Cachaca, my first experience with the spirit, is one of these boundary-changing drinks.

Cachaca is a subset of rum, an alcohol spirit that is created from distilled sugar cane juice, instead of with corn or normal sugar. Cacacha, and in particular, Caipirinha (1 lime, 1 shot of a Cachaca, 2 teaspoons of sugar, and crushed ice) are very common drinks in South America. The spirit has been rapidly gaining in popularity in the last few years in the United States, and this is for good reason. While most imbibers are familiar with the flavor and taste of rum, Boca Locaprovides a completely new way to enjoy the spirit. For starts, the bouquet of the Boca Loca is much more fruit-based than the typical woodsy, ashy syrup smell offput by most types of rum. In the same way, the spirit alone goes down much easier than the average rum, the lighter notes of a Boca Loca belying the alcohol content present in each bottle.

The alcohol disappears completely when individuals place Boca Local against a cola product, while mixing the spirit with a Sprite or Squirt turns up a tropical delight that is without comparison. The Boca Loca is the first Cachaca that we have had the chance to try, but for my palette’s sake, I sincerely hope that it will not be the last. Go down to your local liquor store and purchas ea bottle of Boca Loca; the tender care placed into the creation of this spirit ensures that your experience with this spirit will be an amazing one.
