Strategy games (especially those dealing with war) are finally on the uptick after the days when it seemed like Command and Conquer was the end-all, be-all of the genre. Atari picked up this title from EA, and the revamp in terms of graphical quality, game play, and overall experience from previous iterations in the line is immediately noticeable. The great thing about Codename Panzers: Cold War is the ability for gamers of all skill levels to be able to play and succeed in the title.

This is due to the fact that the game allows players to take increasingly intense levels of control of their forces, meaning that the young kid (with proper parental supervision) and the micromanaging veteran will be able to draw the same level of enjoyment from the title, even if the game play differs considerably between the two. Furthermore, the period in which the title is set (the Cold War) represents a period that is largely glossed over by companies that want to cash in on either WWII or Vietnam nostalgia. The type of actions that players could take in a WWII sim are different than those that they can take in Codename Panzers: Cold War, and this different strategy will give players a few more hours of game play (So that they may be able to master it). 18 distinct missions await the player, placing their troops in a number of locations that will be very familiar to students that have focused on Eastern Europe in the past.

The inclusion of a vibrant multiplayer side to Codename Panzers: Cold War ensure that a different dimension keeps players busy over the course of another few weeks or months. Hopefully the sales of this title are enough that Atari will continue to service the title and provide different maps and additions that ewill further flesh out a title that is well worth every penny that a player will need to purchase the title. Never before (even with all those movies in the nineties and an oughts) has the Cold War been so interesting!
