For those players that are familiar with Resistance, Resistance: Retribution starts off immediately after the events that concluded 2006’s Resistance: Fall Of Man. Where individuals may prefer the single-player mode, I found myself continually coming back to the multi-player mode. The mode allows up to 8 people the opportunity to frag, shoot, or otherwise disembowel their opponents. Other modes are completely innovative in regard to what they allow players to do. Specifically, given the right PSP models (PSP 2000 or 3000), players that have Resistance 2 in their Playstation 3 can play Retribution on their television with a normal Playstation controller.

While this is a must-buy type of addition, Sony goes one step further and uses backwards compatibility (much like Sonic & Knuckles did all those years ago) and changes up the game play of Retribution to allow for Greyson to be infected by the Chimeran virus. While infected (until one turns off the game or batteries die), Greyson can use the HE .44 Magnum, swim underwater, and regenerates health. Furthermore (and most intriguing to me), the behavior of characters that Grayson interacts with in the game completedly changes due to Greyson’s infection.

With all the functionality that Sony has crammed into the title, graphics and audio would seem to be a second thought. However, it seems with every wonderfully-rendered building, character, and weapon that Sony has ensured that the experience that a player will have with Retribution is the most realistic that can be created on the PSP. The audio is crisp and clear (made all the more impressive considering the on-board audio of the PSP), while the controls work perfectly. If you were a fan of the previous Resistance titles, Retribution has to be the next purchase in the line. In many ways, this title surpasses even prior efforts in the Resistance line owing much to the added functionality and thinking outside the box that really distinguishes the title from the other (still great) titles in the line.
