Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2, as people may expect, is a sequel to the similarly-named 2006 title, which itself had a rich heritage. The game itself is set in an alternate timeline in 1930s Japan, where the Taisho period (which ended in 1926) had maintained stability into the 1930s. Players assume the role of Raidou, whom along with eir cat Gouto pull double-duty as detectives and devil banishers. The game is great in its blending of a number of different genres, whether it be RPGs or mystery titles. The game, while having definite paths for players to take, seems very open-ended. Should players want to settle more into a mystery role, they can stay away from much of the battling that is present if players just run around places like the Dark Realm all day.

The ability of Raidou to bring along demos further increases the uniqueness of each experience, as over 150 different demons, all possessing different types of powers, can be brought into battle. However, the best thing that Devil Summoner 2 brings to the table would have to be the MAG system, which means that the ability of Raidou and eir demons to cast spells is based on how intelligently they attack enemies. By exploiting an enemy’s weakness, the amount of MAG that they receive for future battles is greater than what would be received during a poorer-planned battle. The graphics in the game are stellar, ensuring that players will often forget that the title is circumscribed by the graphical limitations of the Playstation 2, while the music is stellar, a mishmash of songs brought over from the original Devil Summoner title along with new tracks created by Shoji Meguro.

Make sure to buy a copy of the deluxe edition of Devil Summoner 2, and you will get a beauty display box along with a Raiho plushie. Kudos have to go out to Atlus for bringing an amazing title out, one that actually stays as true to the original title as any that I could conceive. In the same vein, the game enchances the experience that players had with the original title, making this into a game that should not be out of players’ consoles for the rest of the summer.
