Along with Batman: Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader?, the first issue of the eight-part Blackest Night storyline is the first comic that we have reviewed from a major company. Geoff Johns begins this arc with positive imagery, showcasing exactly how many in the DC Universe were able to move on from major events. Those that were in Coast City were able to firmly mend themselves in the years since the city was destroyed, while superheroes were able to continue on, despite many associates and lovers of them falling in various storylines.

Where the first half of this title really does have a sense of normality, the discovering of Bruce Wayne’s disturbed corpse by Alfred sets things in motion that could shake up the entirety of the DC Universe. Whether the different factions of superheroes, along with the recently-fractured Green Lantern core, will be able to stop the menace will be explained in the next issues of the series. The sharp art quality of this first issue will assuredly keep readers on the edges of their seats, while there is enough in the way of back story present that even individuals that have been out of the comic game for a few years (such as myself) will be able to understand what is going on. Blackest Night is destined to be one of the larger events in DC Universe continuity, and I sincerely hope to see where the arc ends up.
