What a difference two years make. On Trio B.C., the band’s sophomore record, San Antonio’s Girl in a Coma has matured greatly, both musically and lyrically. It’s not that their debut was bad, just very clear that the band grew up listening to The Smiths and not a whole lot else.

On their second effort, the band draws from a far more diverse collection of musical idols – everyone from Ted Leo to The Breeders, though it’s clear the still throw on some Smiths every now and then. Front woman Nina Diaz’s voice is impressively powerful on rockers like “In the Day” and “Vino.” The sound is a little crisper and cleaner on Trio B.C. and the melodies are much stronger. The LP is about one or two songs too many (“Pink Lemonade” and “Empty Promise,” two of the slower tracks, just don’t seem to fit in with the rest of the songs on the record), but still a fantastic effort and a step in the right direction.

Top tracks: “In the Day,” “Static Mind,” “Vino” and “El Monte”
