Flight of the Conchords – The Complete Second Season (DVD)

You’d think the joke would be wearing a little thin after two seasons, but Flight of the Conchords – HBO’s take on New Zealand folksters/comics Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement – still comes off surprisingly fresh.

The second season, just out on DVD, is actually a bit stronger than the debut now that the back stories have all been set up and all of the characters fleshed out. The duo, though certainly interesting, do get overshadowed by the supporting characters, particularly the brilliantly cast Mel (Kristen Schaal), the band’s biggest fan/stalker and Dave (Arj Barker), their buddy and pawn shop owner, steal just about every single scene they are in.

In the second season, the guys ditch their manager, get him back and eventually face the danger of being deported. Oddly enough for a musical comedy, the episodes drag occasionally during a handful of the musical numbers (especially songs like “Petrov, Yelyena, and Me” and “Hurt Feelings”). It’s the dialogue between the musical numbers where the show really excels. Though HBO has already asked for another season, McKenzie and Clement have yet to sign on for a third.
