When Fred Mascherino of The Color Fred/Taking Back Sunday felt the itch to get back in a band, he enlisted some pretty impressive friends to scratch it. “I had been playing mainly with my solo project [The Color Fred] for the past two years and I decided it was finally time to get a band going again,” Fred explains. With a few new songs in hand, he traveled to Birmingham, AL to record with producer Jason Elgin and soon met up with Alabama native, Andy Jackson [of Hot Rod Circuit]. “I’ve admired Andy’s playing and songwriting for so long,” he continues. “So when it came time to put this together, he was the first call I made.”

Feeling that the songwriting chemistry was too strong to be ignored, the two joined forces to form the new band INITIALS, recruiting bassist Steven Lucarelli from Solid State metallurgists Once Nothing and ex-VersaEmerge drummer Anthony Martone. “With two singer/songwriters in the band, the sky’s the limit with creativity” says Andy of the new band, who together with Fred will be sharing singing duties on this project that they describe as American Rock Revival Music. Adds bassist Steve Lucarelli, “The four of us happened to be looking to join a band at the same time so we’re starting out on the same page. It’s been great seeing happens when we get in a room together. Our goal is to play great songs and hit the road immediately.”

The first batch of songs by Initials (which will be unveiled at their very first show on Wednesday evening) share a thematic thread very close to Fred. Motivated by a series of fires that terrorized his hometown of Coatesville, PA earlier this year (a number of arsonists were finally arrested in the spring but not before setting almost 50 fires), the songs he has written tell a tale of physical and emotional tolls on a couple trying to stay awake at night to protect their home while having to get through regular life during the day. He and Andy will spend the next few months fleshing out the rest of the album which is lated for a 2010 release.
